2017 Gundog Estate Shiraz

The 9th vintage of our Estate Shiraz is the first to not exclusively come from the Dahlberg vineyard in Murrumbateman. The blend looks like this; 30% Dahlberg ‘Bests’ Shiraz, 36.5% Dahlberg SA1654 / BVRC12, 8% Four Winds (Murrumbateman), 23% Wallaroo vineyard (Hall), 2.5% Viognier. For each parcel, a combination of crushed fruit and whole-berries were cold-soaked for 2 days, prior to warm fermentations, which we allowed to initiate naturally, before over-seeding with M2 yeast. Maturation then took place over 12 months in (25% new) French oak puncheons. I think this is one of our best releases of Estate Shiraz yet – right there with the 2015. After the very warm 2016 vintage, it’s a return to form in terms of style; spicy and complex yet carrying that magical backbone of dark fruit and velvety tannins. While not as forthcoming as the 2016, it’s a very resolved wine, which boasts brilliant freshness and, to me, expresses its regional identity exceptionally well.
